Description | : | Herbs with long trailing branches; stem reddish, tomentose. Leaves unequal, ovate, obtuse, undulate along margins, truncate to subcordate at base, tomentose; petiole to 1 cm long. Flowers 4 mm long, 4-10 together, in axillary or terminal, peduncled umbels; bracts 5, ovate, glandular, perianth pink, stamens 3, capsule 3 x 1 mm, clavate, 5-ribbed, glandular. |

Medicinal Use / Activity | : | Blood purification, in vitro anti-cancer, antiestrogenic, immunomodulatory and anti-amoebic. Popular in Ayurveda, this herb is known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The roots of Boerhavia diffusa, commonly known as 'Punarnava', are used by a large number of tribes in India for the treatment of various hepatic disorders and for internal inflammation. Anodectal data has also reported effectiveness of Boerhavia diffusa incases of oedema and ascites resulting from early cirrhosis of the liver and chronic peritonitis. |
