Description | : | tall, robust, stem striate, leaves long-petioled elliptic- or ovate-lanceolate acute or finely acuminate, spikes in dense thyrses squarrose from the long recurved bracts, centre one longest, bracts acicular recurved very much longer than the oblong-lanceolate acuminate sepals. Stem 4-5 ft., sometimes thicker than the thumb, glabrous or puberulous. Leaves 2-6 by 1-3 in., base cuneate; petiole as long. Spikes suberect, red, green or yellow. Seeds 1/20 in. diam., either yellowish-white or pitchy black with a thickened rounded border, or pitchy with a narrow thin border. |

Medicinal Use / Activity | : | The plant is diuretic. Water from the macerated plants is used as a wash to treat pains in the limbs. The roots are boiled with honey and then used as a laxative for infants. The ash from the stems is used as a wound dressing. The heated leaves are applied externally on tumours. |
