Description | : | A large tree; branchlets reddish; bark red inside, exuding a watery sap when cut. Leaves opposite or sub-opposite, 3-16 x 1.5-7.5 cm, elliptic, ovate-oblong or obovate, glabrous, dark green, shining above, glaucous beneath; petiole 0.5-1 cm long, channelled. Cymes axillary, dichotomous, 7.5-12 cm long; peduncle 2.5-6.5 cm long, often red. Flower 5 mm in diameter, whitish; calyx 4-5-lobed, lobes rounded, margin membranous; stamens included, filaments recurved, anthers with a 2-lobed connective. Ovary adnate to the disc; style very short, persistent. Fruit a dry, ovoid, drupe, 1-15 cm long, 1-celled, 1-seeded. Ceylon Tea is a large evergreen tree, upto 5 meters high. The genus name Elaeodendron means, olive tree - maybe referring to the ovoid fruit. Branchlets are reddish; bark red inside, exuding a watery sap when cut. Leaves are simple, opposite, 3-16 x 1.5-7.5 cm, elliptic, ovate-oblong or obovate, glabrous, dark green, shining above, glaucous beneath; petiole 0.5-1 cm long, channelled. Inflorescence is an axillary dichotomous cyme; Flower white or greenish yellow. Stamens four, inserted on the margin of the disk, recurved; anthers with a bilobed connective. Stamens shorter than petals. Disk thick and fleshy. Ovary 4-celled united with the disk; style short; fruit green in colour, ovoid and a drupe. In the Western Ghats, it is found in Satara, Pune, Konkan (Harishchandragad). Flowering: February-May. |

Medicinal Use / Activity | : | anti-septic, Gyanic problems; The dried and powdered leaves are used as sternutatoires. They are also burnt and the smoke used as a fumigant in the treatment of certain nerve diseases, particularly to rouse women from hysteria. The powdered leaves are used as a snuff to relieve headaches. The bark is astringent and is also considered poisonous. The fresh root bark is rubbed into a paste with water and applied as a poultice on swellings. The root is said to be specific against snake bite. A cold water extract of the crushed roots is used as an emetic. |
